Business Ethics

Course leader: László Fekete

Laszlo Fekete teaches a BA Course on Business Ethics. The course introduces the main concepts, theories, analytical tools and decision making algorithms of business ethics. The aim of the course is two-fold. First, it gives an overview of today’s most important business ethics issues and broadens the students’ knowledge and awareness of the ethical aspects of business life. Second, it develops their capacity for understanding and analyzing ethical dilemmas. It explores those conceptual and managerial tools which aim at coping with the ethical challenges and help in building an ethical company, and making responsible business decisions.

The course discusses the role of business concerning the basic social, economic and environmental issues like distributive justice, social welfare, equity, fairness, transparency, value-based leadership, corporate citizenship, corporate social responsibility, and environmental sustainability. At the end of the course students should be familiar with the topical issues of business ethics including basic ethics concepts (deontology, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, discourse ethics, and feminist ethics); distributive justice (maximin principle); corporate social responsibility, corporate citizenship; value-based leadership; the stakeholder theory of the firm and the issues of stakeholder management; the ethical institutions of the corporation; ethical decision making; the challenges of globalization; international environmental law and global ethics; and future generation and the problems of intergenerational equity.

Corporate Ethical Conflicts

Laszlo Fekete teaches an MA course on Corporate Ethical Conflicts. The course gives an introduction into the main concepts and theories of the corporate governance systems as well as analytical tools and decision making algorithms of business ethics, behavioral economics and experimental economics. The course gives an overview of today’s most important business ethics issues of corporate practices. It develop the students’ capacity for understanding and analyzing corporate ethical conflicts. It explores the conceptual and managerial tools which aim at coping with the ethical challenges of corporations.

The topics of the course include ethical perspectives toward business; an overview of the current ethical issues and the corporate misconducts in the global economy; motivations of economic decision makers (game-theoretical approaches, theory and experiment in the analysis of behavioral economics and experimental economics); corporate governance systems, organizational responses to corporate misconducts; performance, executive compensation and the fraudulent behavior of corporate managers; the crowding out effect; gender inequality and discrimination in the workplace; hostile takeover and its consequences (poison pill, dead hand pill, greenmail, goodbye kiss, golden parachute etc.); economic (and political) rent-seeking in corporation; innovation and patent troll corporation; value-based leadership and organizational frameworks for responsible business functioning.

Roles and Duties of Management

Laszlo Zsolnai’s "The Roles and Duties of Management" is an elective course in the CEMS Masters in International Management program at the Corvinus University of Budapest. The course introduces the new management profile based on the CEMS MIM qualification framework. The future international manager is defined as a reflexive practitioner who is committed to environmental sustainability, exercises social responsibility, works with sensitivity toward gender and diversity issues, harmonizes information and communications technologies with processes and organizational culture, applies holistic perspective in problem solving, cooperates with social and political actors, and is engaged in progressive entrepreneurship.
